Stories from a Dental Assistant
Have you ever embarrassed yourself at the dentist office? Chances are if you have, your dental assistant was there to witness it. Dental assistants play a vital role in patient care and assisting the dentist quickly and accurately. They also see things they wished they hadn’t seen. But sometimes, when the patient opens their mouths, a whole different world opens up with it. Did you know your tongue can turn green from not brushing it? Either did this dental assistant, but she saw it and now it can’t be unseen.
A patient made an appointment with the dentist because he was having tooth pain. The dental assistant brought the patient back and asked him some questions about his tooth pain. Turns out he’s had the pain for a while, but didn’t have insurance and was nervous about needing a root canal. The assistant told the patient the dentist would need an x-ray of the tooth and went and got the x-ray sensor to get the x-ray with. The assistant set up the sensor to the computer and told the patient to go ahead and open. Then she saw it; his GREEN tongue. The dental assistant, being relatively new, couldn’t believe what she was seeing. This assistant told it like it was and stopped what she was doing to inform the patient that his tongue was not supposed to be that color. He looked at the assistant, shocked!
The moral of this story is this: please, please, brush your teeth and while you’re doing that, you might as well brush your tongue as well.
