Nightguards or mouthgaurds at Heritage Dental Associates are made of flexible plastic and molded to fit the shape of your teeth. The assistant will put cold, wet playdoe type material in your mouth and hold the tray in place for about a minute so it can harden up. This provides the lab with a mold of your teeth so they can fit the nightguard or mouthguard to your mouth. Mouthguards are recommended to protect the jaw and teeth during sports such as boxing, football, basketball, or other activities where your mouth may be hit. Custom mouthguards are always the best option when looking to protect you or your childs teeth from injury. You get the custom fit of your childs mouth or your mouth that makes it so it doesn’t move around. If you are getting this for sports you can request it to have your logo or sports team colors. Nightguards are recommended for patients who clench or grind their teeth at night. A nightguard not only protects your teeth but also helps your joints in your jaw. People that have sore jaws when they wake up in the morning would benefit from having a nightguard made and worn at night when they sleep. Nightguards are hard and non flexible that you wear on your upper teeth so when you grind or clench you don’t wear on your natural teeth. Some people try wearing the store bought mouthguards to bed at night which is not a good idea. These are a ruber material that provides flex and will actually do your jaw more damage than good.
If you decide a nightguards or mouthguards is right for you, we will take an impression of your teeth which will then be sent to a lab to make a custom fit guard. It takes about 2 weeks to get this back from the lab and In most cases you can choose from a variety of colors and styles. On average, nightguards or mouthguards last between 3 and 10 years.
